Summer Work in 2018

Over the summer we had to choose 5 things that we hadn't done out of a list of 65. We had to tick everything we had done and then choose the 5 we were going to do. I chose to do the following:

Read a newspaper looking at every page

There were quite a few different stories and themes in the Times newspaper on Friday the 31st August 2018. Different stories including an abusive paraglider, a French actor being accused of rape and different political stories too. There were murder investigations going on within this mixup of different stories too. One of these murders was a woman thrown off a boat at a party and the man responsible (out of the country and a fugitive from the law) was sentenced to 6 years in prison if / when he returns to the UK.

Kings College takes a stand against geese who were disturbing punters with high powered lasers with holographic sights on to scare them away. Kings College was going to cull the birds but there were protesting students who put a stop to that plan. Kirsty Young off Desert Island Discs takes a break off the Radio 4 show so that she can deal with her newly diagnosed, Fibromyalgia which is starting to become more common with women within the past 30 years.

There were benefit testing cases, Ignorance from Theresa May and ISIS Jihadists accused of murder alongside some illegal ingenuity too. There was a group/gang of people that were smuggling A-list drugs, weapons and cellphones (including SIM cards) which clearly shows a lot of thought went into doing this (even though they got caught) and last but not least there were the normal Art and Sports sections.

Draw the view from your bedroom window

Watch a film twice, back to back

The film I chose to do a back to back session of was Deadpool (the first one released in 2015). ON the first time through the film was a lot more gripping and the humour was better too. It may have been mostly due to watching it in succession as I was able to repeat some of the lines with the characters in the film. The fourth wall breaks are amazing however many times I see it. The director and actors did an amazing job at making the film with all the humour which Ryan Reynolds had a massive part in making.

On the second time around I was able to pick out more things in the film that I missed before. An example of this is the Voltron Defender of the Universe Ring that Wade Wilson wins at the arcade with Vanessa. The white flag at the end of the film which is just a way for more of the Ryan Reynolds humour which is what this film has a massive part of.

Finally at the end of the film with the climactic battle between the X-Men characters in the film and Deadpool had good points in it too. Such as when Deadpool writes Francis in the dead bodies of his victims. The “brown pants” jokes throughout the film also make Deadpool seem less and less serious throughout the film. The anger and frustration shown develop the character's actions across the film and in my opinion, make the film even better than it would have been without it.

Read, watch or listen to a film review

Jeremy Jahns stated that Alpha, the film about a wolf and a guy teaming up against what nature throws at them was a “TV movie” which means it was alright and touched on some good points about the domestication of wolves. Jeremy talks about how in the last act of the film the scenes were choppy and seemed like they were missing details and events between them. I picked up on this too when I watched the film but unlike Jeremy, I didn't feel like the movie was any worse because of it. The movie was roughly an hour and a half and Jeremy also put the film down because of that too. He said that the movie could have been longer and more engaging and I do agree with him. Both Jeremy and I believe that the movie wasn’t tailored to younger audiences due to the only (although rather limited) speech was done in a different language and therefore had to be subtitled which younger viewers wouldn’t have enjoyed.

Blog or Vlog your day
On the 9th of August, we docked at Lisbon for the day. At first, we got off with my grandparents but they decided to go on a tuk-tuk tour and see the surrounding sights that way. My parents and I decided to walk into the town centre and we had a look at the cathedrals and churches in that area.

At about 11am we went to Starbucks and got my Mum a coffee cup that says Lisbon on it as a souvenir and we also stopped at Pandora to collect a blue bracelet for my Mum too. My Dad and I decided to play a little bit of Pokemon GO (I like it still, use it to fill my time every now and then like during commutes to and from Long Road (last year) and when I am walking around in Ely.

Later on, we stopped at a cafe for lunch and a drink as it was roughly 25 Degrees Celsius so we had cold drinks too. After that, we walked through the old city and made our way back to the ship. On our way, we stopped at a few souvenir shops and had a browse but nothing suited any ideas of a gift for my grandparents as a thank you for the trip.

When we got back to the ship we headed to a place called the Wind Jammer where you can get free food and drinks all day while you are on the ship, had another cooling drink and then called it a day. That night we watched as we left the port and went under this bridge but because the ship was so big we only just fit under it!  A huge amount of people were on the decks videoing and I could see the amazement on their faces. After that, we had a few days at seeing and then arrived in Southampton two days after leaving Lisbon.
